What Is THX?

THX is not, as is sometimes mistaken, a surround sound format. Instead it is a standard used to complement the existing surround formats. It was developed by Tomlinson Holman, an engineer hired by George Lucas, in order to replicate the film soundtrack as close to the dubbing soundstage as possible. It does this by setting rigid parameters as regards speaker sensitivity/direction and amplifier power output.

In order to completely implement THX in your home cinema system, you need either separate THX spec. amps and processor or an integrated amp and a full set of THX spec. loudspeakers. This doesn't come cheap, but you get what you pay for.
