What Is Dolby Digital?
D
olby Digital made it's appearance in 1997, originally known as AC-3, it offers up to six discrete (separate) channels of sound. They are left, centre, right, left rear, right rear and a dedicated sub-woofer channel. Unlike Dolby Pro logic, the rear channels are fed the same frequency signal as the fronts and are in stereo. The director, if he wants, can have each channel deliver a different sound independently of each other with no bleed between the channels. Presently in the UK, Dolby Digital is only available on some laserdiscs and on DVD. Check on the back of a DVD box to see what form Dolby Digital is being used. Dolby Digital covers mono sound reproduction as well as full surround sound with the full specification marked as Dolby Digital 5.1
